Originally named the Chickasaws, the first Memphis Chicks won eight Southern Association pennants and a 1952 Dixie Series title under manager Luke Appling. That run ended when Russwood Park burned down after a game in 1960; unable to afford a rebuild, the team folded at season's end.

A new Chicks franchise debuted in 1978 in the Southern League, best known as where Bo Jackson began his professional career, and captured a 1990 league title as a Kansas City Royals affiliate. Other alumni included Luis Aparicio, Pete Gray, and Terry Francona. The team relocated to Jackson, Tennessee, after the 1997 season.
