The Spirits of St Louis played two seasons in the ABA starting in 1974. The franchise had started as the Houston Mavericks in 1967 before becoming the Carolina Cougars in 1969. Hall of Famer Rod Thorn served as head coach for one season and a young Bob Costas was the play-by-play announcer.
After a successful first season with stars like Moses Malone, Maurice Lucas, and Marvin "Bad News" Barnes, the team struggled in its second year and rarely drew crowds of even 1,000 people. The Spirits were excluded from the 1976 merger with the established league. The owners, though, refused to take the NBA's $3 million buyout. To move the merger along, the teams that joined the NBA agreed to pay 1/7 of their television revenue to the Spirits' former owners — a deal that lasted nearly four decades until a buyout in 2014. Notable players included Moses Malone (Hall of Fame), Maurice Lucas, Marvin "Bad News" Barnes, Ron Boone, and Don Chaney.

- To order a fully blank jersey, check the "Leave blank" box. Blank jerseys still require full production time — we don't keep them in stock.
Important review carefully before ordering
Once your order is placed:
- Changes can only be made within 48 hours of purchase. After 48 hours, the order has entered production and we can't modify it.
- Cancellations after 48 hours are subject to a 20% restocking fee.
Construction options
Many jerseys offer choices like application method (replica/printed vs sewn tackle twill), sleeve length, or add-on patches. The available options appear on the customization screen as you go through it.
Custom measurements
We can produce jerseys in custom measurements including women's and youth sizes. We can also modify other details on the jerseys shown on the site. For these requests, email custom@royalretros.com before ordering.
Blank-jersey exchanges
Custom jerseys ordered blank (no name or number) can be exchanged for another size or for store credit. Custom jerseys with a name or number printed/sewn are final sale.

Custom jerseys are made-to-order and ship in 3-7 weeks depending on construction style. The exact lead time for the style you choose is shown on the Decoration Type screen during customization.
Expedited shipping
Choosing an expedited shipping method does not speed up production, it only affects how we ship the order once it's been made. If you need your jersey by a specific date, contact us before ordering.
