The Hampton Roads Rhinos were a proposed expansion franchise of the major professional hockey league that never actually played a game. Owner George Shinn — who also owned the NBA's Charlotte Hornets — submitted an official application on November 1, 1996, for one of four expansion slots, proposing to build a new $142 million arena in Norfolk, Virginia, and unveiling a distinctive blue, purple, and teal color scheme.

The league rejected Shinn's bid on February 19, 1997, citing the region's East Coast location, lack of political unity, relatively small market size, and proximity to the Washington Capitals. The Rhinos never took the ice. The proposed identity — the unusual color scheme and the bold "Rhinos" name — survives only in design concept and a Royal Retros tribute, making this one of the most distinctive "phantom team" entries in Legacy Hockey history.

  • To order a fully blank jersey, check the "Leave blank" box. Blank jerseys still require full production time — we don't keep them in stock.

Once your order is placed:

  • Changes can only be made within 48 hours of purchase. After 48 hours, the order has entered production and we can't modify it.
  • Cancellations after 48 hours are subject to a 20% restocking fee.

Construction options

Many jerseys offer choices like application method (replica/printed vs sewn tackle twill), sleeve length, or add-on patches. The available options appear on the customization screen as you go through it.

Custom measurements

We can produce jerseys in custom measurements including women's and youth sizes. We can also modify other details on the jerseys shown on the site. For these requests, email custom@royalretros.com before ordering.

Blank-jersey exchanges

Custom jerseys ordered blank (no name or number) can be exchanged for another size or for store credit. Custom jerseys with a name or number printed/sewn are final sale.

Production timeframe

Custom jerseys are made-to-order and ship in 3-7 weeks depending on construction style. The exact lead time for the style you choose is shown on the Decoration Type screen during customization.

Expedited shipping

Choosing an expedited shipping method does not speed up production, it only affects how we ship the order once it's been made. If you need your jersey by a specific date, contact us before ordering.
