The DC Defenders have been one of the flagship franchises of revived spring football since the 2020 launch of the XFL revival, playing at Audi Field in Washington across all three league iterations. The Defenders reached the 2023 XFL Championship Game under head coach Reggie Barlow before falling to the Arlington Renegades 35–26 in the title game.

The franchise continued into the UFL in 2024 when the XFL merged with the USFL, and remains one of the most-followed teams in alternative spring football. The Defenders' branding has remained consistent across the franchise's three league iterations.
