The Charlotte Stars were the transitional in-between name used briefly when the New York Stars franchise of the WFL relocated to Charlotte mid-1974 before formally rebranding as the Charlotte Hornets. The Stars name appeared on early Charlotte marketing materials before the Hornets name took hold.
The franchise played out the remainder of 1974 and the abbreviated 1975 season in Charlotte under both names, giving the Carolinas their first major-league pro football team and laying groundwork for the region's later USFL and NFL ventures.
