The Charlotte Hornets played in the WFL after the New York Stars relocated mid-1974, then completed the 1975 season at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. The Hornets gave the Carolinas their first major-league pro football team and helped lay the groundwork for the region's later USFL Carolina Cobras and NFL Panthers ventures.
When the WFL suspended operations in October 1975, the Hornets had been one of the league's better-supported franchises in its abbreviated second season. The Hornets name would later be revived in Charlotte's NBA franchise from 1988 onward — though the basketball Hornets are unrelated to the WFL football team.
