DC Sports History

The Homestead Grays are the cornerstone of DC's pro sports legacy. Founded in Pittsburgh, the Grays moved to a dual-home arrangement starting in the late 1930s and played home games at Griffith Stadium in DC, winning nine consecutive Negro National League pennants from 1937 to 1945 with Hall of Famers Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard, Cool Papa Bell, and others. The original Washington Senators (1901–1960, became the Twins; expansion 1961–1971, became the Rangers) gave DC two MLB franchises that both relocated. The Washington Bullets won the 1978 NBA championship. The DC Defenders carry the city's pro football torch in the UFL today. The Washington Federals gave DC USFL football in the early 1980s.
