What Were the Virginia Destroyers?
The Virginia Destroyers were a professional football team based in Hampton Roads, Virginia, that played in the United Football League. The franchise had previously competed as the Florida Tuskers before relocating to Virginia Beach for the 2011 season — where, in its first year in the Commonwealth, it won the UFL championship.
The 2011 Championship — A Title for Virginia Beach
The Destroyers hired veteran coach Marty Schottenheimer — a 200-game NFL winner — as their head coach and general manager in 2011, and he delivered immediately. On October 21, 2011, Virginia defeated the two-time defending champion Las Vegas Locomotives 17–3 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex to win the UFL title. Strong safety Aaron Rouse was named game MVP after returning an interception for a touchdown and picking off three passes. It was Schottenheimer's first championship as a pro head coach, and he was named UFL Coach of the Year. A Royal Retros Destroyers throwback honors that title run.
The Venue — Virginia Beach Sportsplex
