The Houston Gamblers played in both the original United States Football League (USFL) (1984–1985) and the revived USFL (2022–2023). Few franchises in spring football history produced as much offensive firepower as the original Gamblers.

Founded in 1984, the original Houston Gamblers introduced the world to the high-flying Run-and-Shoot offense engineered by coordinator Mouse Davis under head coach Jack Pardee. With future Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly at quarterback throwing to receivers Richard Johnson, Ricky Sanders, and Gerald McNeil — collectively known as the "Mouseketeers" — the Gamblers averaged a stunning 33 points per game in 1984 and finished 13–5. Kelly threw for 5,219 yards and 44 touchdowns that season, the highest single-season passing total in pro football history at the time. Houston returned to the playoffs in 1985 before merging with the New Jersey Generals in the planned move to fall 1986 that never came. The Gamblers' Run-and-Shoot influence reshaped the modern passing game across both college and the NFL.

The revived Houston Gamblers competed in the modern USFL's two seasons (2022–2023) — playing as a road-only team with home games hosted in Birmingham and Memphis — before the league merged into the UFL. Though the modern Gamblers couldn't match the original's offensive fireworks, the franchise's name carried forward the legacy of one of the boldest offenses in pro football history.
