The Toronto Toros were the relocated Ottawa Nationals, moved south for the 1973–74 World Hockey Association (WHA) season after a single season in the capital. Owner John Bassett built the Toros around bold signings — most notably the league-shaking 10-year contract for 17-year-old Czechoslovak star Vaclav Nedomansky — and the team played their first season at small Varsity Arena before moving to Maple Leaf Gardens as a same-building tenant of the established top-tier franchise.
Across three seasons in Toronto the Toros built competitive rosters featuring Nedomansky, Frank Mahovlich (the elder Big M, joining for two seasons), and Paul Henderson. The Maple Leaf Gardens arrangement proved costly, and Bassett relocated the franchise south of the border for the 1976–77 season, where it would become the Birmingham Bulls. The Toros' bright-red Maple Leaf Gardens identity remains one of the most distinctive WHA visual marks.
