The Birmingham Bulls were the relocated Toronto Toros, moved south by owner John Bassett for the 1976–77 World Hockey Association (WHA) season. The Bulls played at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center Coliseum and gave the Deep South its first major-league professional hockey team — a market gamble that produced one of the most distinctive identities in WHA history.

The Bulls became famous for their willingness to sign teenage stars who couldn't yet play in the major professional hockey league due to age restrictions — most notably the "Baby Bulls" of 1978–79, including Rick Vaive, Michel Goulet, Rob Ramage, Craig Hartsburg, and Ken Linseman, all under 20 and all destined for long top-tier careers. The Bulls also embraced a brawling, swashbuckling style that drew huge Birmingham crowds. When the WHA dissolved in 1979, the Bulls were not among the four franchises absorbed into the major professional hockey league, and the team transitioned into the Central Hockey League before eventually folding. The Bulls remain one of the most-collected obscure professional hockey identities in American sports.
