Team: New York Yanks (previously Boston Yanks, then New York Bulldogs)
Years Active: 1944–1948 Boston Yanks · 1949 New York Bulldogs · 1950–1951 New York Yanks
Home: Fenway Park — Boston, MA (1944–1948) · Polo Grounds — New York, NY (1949) · Yankee Stadium — New York, NY (1950–1951)

The New York Yanks were the final form of one of legacy pro football's most restless franchises — a club that carried the same name through three cities and eight seasons without ever quite landing where its owner wanted it. Ted Collins, the businessman and manager behind singer Kate Smith, bought into the NFL in 1944 with one goal: put a football team in Yankee Stadium. The Giants held New York, so Collins was granted Boston instead — and named the club the Yanks anyway.

The Boston years never took hold. Playing at Fenway Park from 1944 through 1948, the Yanks managed just one winning season and struggled for attention in a crowded sports town. When Collins sensed the rival All-America Football Conference was near collapse, he wound down the Boston franchise and was issued a new one for New York, which played the 1949 season as the New York Bulldogs — sharing the Polo Grounds with the Giants and finishing 1–10–1, the worst record in the ten-team league. Rookie quarterback Bobby Layne took his snaps that year behind one of the thinnest rosters in pro football, then moved on to Detroit and a Hall of Fame career.

In 1950 Collins finally got his stadium. Renamed the New York Yanks and installed at Yankee Stadium, the club absorbed talent from the folded AAFC's New York Yankees roster and surged to 7–5 — the best season in franchise history. It didn't last. The 1951 Yanks collapsed to 1–9–2 even while fielding future Hall of Famers Art Donovan and Mike McCormack, alongside two of the era's most important Black players in halfback Buddy Young and George Taliaferro, the first Black player ever drafted by an NFL team. After the 1951 season Collins sold the franchise's assets back to the league, and they were passed on to a Dallas ownership group that fielded the Texans in 1952. The Yanks name disappeared for good — leaving behind a blue-and-white Yankee Stadium jersey that remains one of the great deep cuts of postwar New York football.

Custom Jersey Order Instructions

How to order

  • Type the number and/or name you'd like on the jersey in the customization fields. You can leave the name field blank if you only want a number.
  • Names and numbers are made in ALL CAPS by default. If you want a specific style — such as a lowercase letter or mixed case — please add to the order notes, and/or email custom@royalretros.com.
  • To order a fully blank jersey, check the "Leave blank" box. Blank jerseys still require full production time — we don't keep them in stock.

Important review carefully before ordering

Once your order is placed:

  • Changes can only be made within 48 hours of purchase. After 48 hours, the order has entered production and we can't modify it.
  • Cancellations after 48 hours are subject to a 20% restocking fee.

Many jerseys offer choices like application method (replica/printed vs sewn tackle twill), sleeve length, or add-on patches. The available options appear on the customization screen as you go through it.
