The San Antonio Gunslingers were one of the original United States Football League (USFL)'s most distinctive franchises — and one of its most financially troubled. Owned by oil-and-gas businessman Clinton Manges and coached by Gil Steinke, the Gunslingers played at the historic Alamo Stadium and drew a passionate Texas fanbase. Despite limited resources and high-profile player payment delays that became part of the league's later legal narrative, San Antonio went 7–11 in 1984 and 5–13 in 1985 with quarterback Rick Neuheisel — the future college head coach — leading the offense in 1985. The Gunslingers folded with the rest of the league after 1985, leaving behind a passionate Texas fanbase and a franchise name that remains a cult favorite of original spring football.
