The Houston Comets played 12 seasons in the WNBA from 1997 to 2008 — and captured the league's first four championships in a row from 1997 to 2000, becoming the WNBA's original dynasty. The four-peat featured the legendary trio of Cynthia Cooper (4× WNBA Finals MVP, 2× WNBA MVP), Sheryl Swoopes (3× WNBA MVP), and Tina Thompson under head coach Van Chancellor.

The Comets folded after the 2008 season when the Hilton family ownership group decided to suspend operations — ending one of the most successful franchises in any women's pro sport. Houston returned to the WNBA in 2025 with a new franchise.
