The Washington Darts trace back to 1967, when the club first took the field as Washington Britannica before adopting the Darts identity in 1968 as pro soccer's rival leagues merged into the North American Soccer League. Playing out of the nation's capital, the Darts built their reputation quickly, becoming one of the league's most competitive early rosters.

In their landmark 1970 season, the Darts finished atop the Southern Division at 14-6-4 — the best mark in the league — and advanced to the final, where they fell to the Rochester Lancers on aggregate across two legs. That same year the club claimed the International Cup. A quieter third-place finish followed in 1971, after which the franchise relocated to Florida.
