The Conquistadors ("Q's") were the first and only expansion team in the ABA, joining for 1972–73. Hall of Famer K.C. Jones coached the club to the playoffs in its first season. The following year, the team signed Wilt Chamberlain as a player-coach — but the Lakers sued to prevent Chamberlain from playing.
With Chamberlain only serving as a coach, fans lost interest in the team. They became the Sails in 1975, but were informed they would not be included in the merger with the rumored cause being their feud with the Lakers.
