What Was Roller Hockey International?

Roller Hockey International (RHI) was the dominant professional inline roller hockey league of the 1990s, operating from 1993 through 1999. The league played a fast-paced, four-on-four (plus goalie) version of hockey on inline skates rather than ice skates, in arenas across North America. RHI tapped into the inline skating boom of the 1990s and built passionate fanbases in cities including Anaheim, San Jose, Buffalo, Tampa Bay, and Philadelphia. The league's championship trophy was the Murphy Cup. RHI's distinctive 1990s neon-and-Day-Glo aesthetic produced some of the most memorable jersey designs of the decade.

The History of RHI

The Founding (1993). RHI launched in 1993 with twelve charter franchises across North America, capitalizing on the rising popularity of inline skating and the desire for fast, accessible professional hockey-style competition.

The Mid-1990s Peak (1994–1996). RHI expanded rapidly, peaking at over 24 franchises in 1994. Anaheim Bullfrogs and San Jose Rhinos emerged as dynastic franchises. The Murphy Cup playoffs drew strong local crowds.

The 1997–1999 Contraction. Financial pressures and the natural ebbing of the inline skating fad led to franchise contractions. The league reduced operations and ultimately suspended play after the 1999 season.
