What Were the Providence Reds?

The Providence Reds were a professional hockey team based in Providence, Rhode Island, that played for more than fifty years beginning in the 1920s. One of the original members of the American Hockey League, the Reds were among the most successful and enduring franchises in minor-league hockey history, winning multiple Calder Cup championships and serving as a cornerstone of New England hockey for generations.

An Original AHL Powerhouse

The Reds were there at the beginning of the American Hockey League and stayed at the top for decades. The franchise captured multiple Calder Cup titles across its long history and developed countless players bound for the NHL, playing out of the beloved Rhode Island Auditorium. Late in its run the club was rebranded the Rhode Island Reds before the franchise was relocated, ending one of the great continuous runs in minor-league hockey.

The Venue — Rhode Island Auditorium

For most of their history the Reds played at the Rhode Island Auditorium in Providence, an intimate, raucous barn that was the heart of hockey in southern New England for generations.
