North Florida Sports History

North Florida pro sports history is short on franchises but long on cult appeal. The Jacksonville Sharks of the WFL launched in 1974 with a strong fanbase before financial trouble forced the league to shutter mid-season the following year — the Sharks rebranded briefly as the Jacksonville Express before the WFL collapsed entirely. The Jacksonville Bulls of the USFL (1984–1985) were one of the league's most popular franchises, drawing huge crowds at the Gator Bowl behind quarterback Brian Sipe.
