League: United States Football League (USFL)
Years Active: 1983–1985
Champions: 1983 Michigan Panthers · 1984 Philadelphia Stars · 1985 Baltimore Stars

The United States Football League played three spring-and-summer seasons from 1983 to 1985, positioning itself as a big-money alternative to the NFL and signing stars including Herschel Walker, Jim Kelly, and Steve Young straight out of college.

In August 1984, New Jersey Generals owner Donald Trump led a push to move the league to a fall 1986 schedule, aiming to force a merger with the NFL. The gambit backfired: an antitrust lawsuit against the NFL won the USFL only $3 in damages, and the league folded before the planned fall season could be played, with the Philadelphia Stars franchise — relocated and renamed the Baltimore Stars — winning the final 1985 title.
