The St. Paul Gophers played in the early days of segregated baseball before official Negro Leagues were established. As a result they played mostly as an independent barnstorming team in the pre-NLB era.
The Gophers were able to attract top talent including Bobby Marshall, who would go on to be one of the first Black players to play pro football, and Sammie Ransom, one of the first Black college basketball players. The team notably beat the Leland Giants — considered one of the best teams of the day. Other notable Gophers included James "Candy Jim" Taylor and John "Steel Arm" Taylor.
