The Miami Toros charged through North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1973 to 1976, carrying South Florida's pro soccer banner after the club's earlier one-season identity. Backed by the family that owned Miami's NFL team, the Toros reached the heights in 1974, hosting and narrowly losing the league championship game at the Orange Bowl on penalty kicks following a thrilling draw. The roster produced league Most Valuable Player honorees during the run. Dwindling crowds eventually prompted a move north and a fresh rebrand after the 1976 season.
