The New York Stars played the 1974 season of the WFL at Downing Stadium on Randalls Island. The Stars were the WFL's flagship New York franchise but struggled with weak attendance and the inability to secure a major-stadium lease in the NFL Giants/Jets era.
Mid-season, the franchise relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina and rebranded as the Charlotte Hornets — making the 1974 Stars and 1974–75 Hornets effectively a continuous franchise. The New York market would not host another major-league challenger franchise until the USFL Generals and Express arrived in the 1980s.
