The New Orleans Brass brought professional minor-league hockey to the Crescent City for five seasons from 1997 to 2002, playing at the Municipal Auditorium and later the New Orleans Arena. The Brass were one of several Sun Belt expansion franchises that helped grow the Southern professional hockey ecosystem in the late 1990s, leaning into a distinctive jazz-and-Mardi-Gras-themed identity that played perfectly to the New Orleans market.

The franchise's gold, purple, and green color scheme — referencing Mardi Gras tradition — and the brass-instrument-themed logo made the Brass one of the most visually distinctive Minor League Hockey identities of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The franchise played its final season in 2001–02 before folding ahead of an arena conflict — the New Orleans Arena was needed for the NBA's incoming Hornets. The Brass jersey remains a beloved piece of New Orleans sports history and one of the most distinctive late-1990s Southern hockey identities.
