The Cleveland Crunch was formed almost immediately after the Cleveland Force decided not to return to the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) for the 1988–89 season. The Crunch carried the city's indoor-soccer torch in the MISL until that league folded in 1992.

The Crunch then joined the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) and became one of the most successful franchises in indoor soccer history — capturing three NPSL championships before the franchise's eventual end.
