What Were the Minneapolis Millers?

The Minneapolis Millers were a minor-league baseball institution, playing for decades as one of the most storied franchises in the American Association. Long the top of the city's baseball world — and fierce rivals of the cross-river St. Paul Saints — the Millers served as a high-level affiliate for big-league clubs and a proving ground for some of the greatest players in the history of the game, right up until Major League Baseball arrived in the Twin Cities with the Minnesota Twins in 1961.

Where Legends Came Up

The Millers' roster reads like a Hall of Fame inductee list. A young Ted Williams tore up the American Association for Minneapolis in 1938 on his way to Boston. In 1951, a 20-year-old Willie Mays was hitting .477 for the Millers when the New York Giants called him up to the majors — the rest is history. Generations of future big-leaguers passed through Minneapolis, making the Millers one of the most important development clubs in baseball.

The Venues — Nicollet Park & Metropolitan Stadium

The Millers played for most of their history at cozy Nicollet Park before moving to Metropolitan Stadium, the suburban ballpark that would later host the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. Both parks are touchstones of Minnesota baseball history.
