The LA T-Birds were the world's most popular roller derby team from the 1960s until the late 1980s. Part of the outlaw Roller Games league — formed by skaters who left the original Roller Derby — the Thunderbirds were a national television fixture for decades. From 1965 to 1972, T-Birds home games drew larger crowds than the Lakers or Kings at the Olympic Auditorium.

Successful affiliated teams emerged in Japan, Australia, and Canada under the Thunderbirds banner. Skaters like Ralphie Valladares, Ronnie Robinson, Honey Sanchez, and Sally Vega became household names. The franchise folded in 1993 after more than three decades of barnstorming dominance.
