The Hamilton Tigers played five seasons of major professional hockey in Ontario, established when the Quebec Bulldogs franchise was sold to Hamilton interests for the 1920–21 season. Coached and managed by Percy Thompson — also a part-owner of the Barton Street Arena — the Tigers struggled through four losing seasons before mounting a dramatic turnaround.

The 1924–25 Tigers finished in first place with a 19–10–1 record, the best regular season in the league. But Hamilton never reached the Stanley Cup playoffs. The players walked out — staging the first players' strike in major professional hockey history — demanding $200 each for six extra games the league had added to the schedule. League president Frank Calder warned the players they would be suspended if they didn't return, ordered their back-pay withheld, and ultimately declared the Montreal Canadiens league champions on March 14, 1925, while fining each Tigers player $200. The franchise was dissolved after the strike, and the players' contracts were sold to New York City interests in 1925 to stock the new New York Americans — the franchise that became the Tigers' direct successor. The Hamilton Tigers' brief, tumultuous run ended in one of the most consequential labor disputes in Legacy Hockey history.
