The Seattle Kings were a proposed NFL franchise in 1972, with an ownership group fronted by Hall of Fame running back Hugh McElhenny that intended to play at the planned Kingdome — the indoor stadium that gave the team its name. The Kings group went as far as designing helmets, forming a booster club, and setting up a downtown office topped by a giant football on the roof.
The booster-club football famously caught fire, and the Kings' funding ran out before the bid could be completed. The NFL ultimately awarded Seattle's 1976 expansion franchise to a separate ownership group — the Seahawks — who would go on to play their first three decades in the very Kingdome that had been envisioned as the Kings' home.
