The Seals began play as the San Francisco Seals in the old Western Hockley League (WHL) and eventually moved to Oakland. After two championships in the WHL, the team joined the big league as part of the 1967 expansion class. While in the bigs, the Seals had one of the worst records in the history of professional sports with a .349 winning percentage, despite having talented players like Harry Howell, Dennis Maruk, Al McAdam, Gilles Meloche, and Joey Johnston.
