The Salt Lake Golden Eagles were one of the most enduring franchises of the late-20th-century minor pro hockey era, spending 25 years in three different leagues from their 1969 founding through 1994. The Golden Eagles spent their first five seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL), calling the Salt Palace home and building a passionate Utah fanbase that would follow the team through two more league incarnations.

When the WHL folded after 1973–74, the Golden Eagles moved to the Central Hockey League and dominated the league's late-1970s and early-1980s peak, winning the Adams Cup as CHL champions three times (1974–75, 1979–80, and 1980–81). The franchise then jumped to the International Hockey League (IHL) in 1984, capping its dynasty era with back-to-back Turner Cups as IHL champions in 1986–87 and 1987–88. Long-time owner Art Teece sold to Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller before the 1989–90 season; the franchise was later sold again and relocated to Detroit in 1994, where it became known as the Detroit Vipers. From the Salt Palace to the Delta Center, the Golden Eagles delivered a quarter-century of minor pro hockey in Utah.
