The Las Vegas Thunder were one of the most ambitious experiments of 1990s International Hockey League (IHL) hockey — bringing major-minor-league professional hockey to Las Vegas more than two decades before the city would land its top-tier expansion franchise. Founded in 1993 by businessman Henry Stickney, the Thunder played at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center and quickly became one of the IHL's strongest gate attractions.

The Thunder built competitive rosters across their six-season run, reaching the Turner Cup playoffs in five of their six seasons and signing veterans of the top-tier professional hockey league looking for a Vegas-flavored landing spot. The franchise's signature lightning-bolt logo and the desert-city marketing helped make the Thunder one of the most recognizable IHL identities of the 1990s. Financial pressures and ownership changes forced the Thunder to fold after the 1998–99 season, ending Las Vegas's first chapter of professional hockey before the city's modern hockey era began.
