The Indianapolis Checkers played eight seasons of professional hockey at Market Square Arena, spanning two leagues — the Central Hockey League (CHL) from 1979 to 1984 and the International Hockey League (IHL) from 1984 to 1987 after the CHL folded. The Checkers were one of the strongest minor pro franchises of the early 1980s, building competitive rosters and producing players who went on to top-tier careers.

Indianapolis's professional hockey landscape was already established by the WHA Indianapolis Racers' high-profile run from 1974 to 1978, and the Checkers carried that hockey identity forward for nearly a decade. The franchise folded after the 1986–87 season, but Indianapolis would return to professional hockey in 1988 with the IHL Indianapolis Ice.
