The Flint Generals played 16 seasons in the International Hockey League (IHL), capturing the Turner Cup championship in 1984 by sweeping the Toledo Goaldiggers in a best-of-seven final. The championship was the Generals' first and only major trophy across their long run at the IMA Sports Arena in Flint, Michigan.

The Generals were a Michigan hockey institution for nearly two decades before a dispute with the IMA Sports Arena over weekend playing dates forced ownership to relocate the franchise to Saginaw in July 1985. The Generals name was later revived for other Flint hockey ventures, keeping the local hockey heritage alive — but the original IMA-era Generals' 1984 championship run remains the high-water mark of Flint's professional hockey history.
