The Detroit Vipers gave Detroit a second hockey identity from 1994 to 2001, playing all seven of their International Hockey League (IHL) seasons at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Owned by William Davidson — who also owned the NBA Pistons and the Palace itself — the Vipers were named after the Dodge Viper under a sponsorship arrangement with Chrysler and built their identity around a distinctive purple, black, and silver palette that gave them a clear silo from the Red Wings downtown.

The franchise's high-water mark was the 1996–97 Turner Cup championship, won in a six-game final against the Long Beach Ice Dogs. Captain Stan Drulia anchored a roster that featured Russian rookie phenom Sergei Samsonov (IHL Rookie of the Year), center Peter Ciavaglia, and veteran goaltender Jeff Reese. On October 3, 1997, Hall of Famer Gordie Howe took a single ceremonial shift in a Vipers uniform at age 69 — becoming the only player in pro hockey history to compete in six different decades. The franchise folded with the IHL itself in 2001.
