The Dayton Gems were one of the great International Hockey League (IHL) franchises of the 1960s and 1970s, capturing three Turner Cup championships during a 16-season run at Hara Arena. The Gems' back-to-back championships in 1968–69 and 1969–70 made them one of the league's first true dynasties, and they added a third title in 1975–76 against a deeper IHL field.

The Gems drew strong crowds at Hara Arena across most of their existence and produced a steady pipeline of players who went on to careers in higher leagues. The franchise folded after the 1979–80 season, but the Gems name was revived in later years for other Dayton hockey ventures, keeping the Hara Arena hockey heritage alive in southwestern Ohio.
