Houston Sports History

Houston pro sports identity goes back further and runs deeper than most fans realize. The Houston Colt 45's debuted in 1962 as MLB's expansion entry into Texas, playing three seasons under that name at Colt Stadium before rebranding to the Astros and moving into the Astrodome in 1965. The Houston Aeros of the WHA (1972–1978) won back-to-back Avco World Trophies in 1974 and 1975 with Gordie Howe playing alongside his sons Mark and Marty — one of the most legendary stories in pro hockey. The Houston Gamblers of the USFL (1984–1985) ran Mouse Davis's run-and-shoot offense behind Jim Kelly. The Houston Comets won the first four WNBA championships from 1997–2000.
