The Quebec Nordiques were one of the twelve founding franchises of the World Hockey Association (WHA), giving Quebec City its first top-tier professional hockey team and turning Le Colisée de Québec into one of the most passionate hockey buildings in North America. Owned by a consortium of Quebec businessmen led by Marius Fortier and Paul Racine, the Nordiques quickly built a French-Canadian identity that resonated across the province.

The franchise's defining moment came in 1976–77 when the Nordiques captured the Avco World Trophy as WHA champions, defeating the Winnipeg Jets in a seven-game final behind the scoring of Marc Tardif (a 154-point WHA MVP season), Réal Cloutier, and the goaltending of Richard Brodeur. Across seven WHA seasons the Nordiques produced four 100-point scorers and built a roster celebrated for its francophone core. When the WHA dissolved in 1979, the Nordiques were one of four franchises absorbed into the major professional hockey league.
