Professional football came to the Bay Area in 1946 when San Francisco joined the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) as a charter member. The team was one of the league's strongest throughout its run, reaching the AAFC Championship Game and building one of the most devoted fan bases in the country. When the AAFC merged with the NFL in 1950, San Francisco was one of only three franchises — alongside Cleveland and Baltimore — considered worthy of joining the established league. They brought West Coast football with them, and never looked back.
