The Clowns were formed in Miami as the Giants and soon after became the Clowns. The franchise later moved between Cincinnati and Indianapolis. The Clowns fielded a comedic touring team similar to the Harlem Globetrotters as well as a legitimate major-league-level baseball team that competed in the Negro American League.

The franchise also remains notable for featuring three female players — Toni Stone, Mamie "Peanut" Johnson, and Connie Morgan — pioneering integration well beyond race. Notable players included Hank Aaron (#5), Toni Stone (#29), John Wyatt, Paul Casanova, and Hal King.
