The Providence Reds were one of the longest-running and most decorated franchises in early-to-mid-20th-century professional minor-league hockey, playing 41 seasons in Rhode Island from 1936 to 1977. The Reds were a charter member of the original Minor League Hockey structure and captured four Calder Cup championships across their dynasty era — in 1938, 1940, 1949, and 1956.

The Reds served as a development affiliate for various top-tier organizations across their four-decade run, producing a long pipeline of players who went on to major-league careers. Playing at the Rhode Island Auditorium and later the Providence Civic Center, the Reds built one of the most passionate minor-pro hockey followings in New England. The franchise transitioned through various ownership changes and eventually folded ahead of the 1977–78 season, but the four-banner championship legacy and the deep Providence hockey tradition make the Reds one of the foundational franchises of mid-century American minor-pro hockey.
