The Lowell Lock Monsters played eight seasons of professional minor-league hockey in northeastern Massachusetts from 1998 to 2006, playing at the Tsongas Center on the UMass-Lowell campus. The Lock Monsters operated as a development affiliate of various top-tier organizations across their run, building a steady following in the Merrimack Valley.

The franchise's distinctive name — referencing the legendary Loch Ness Monster while playing on the local "Lock" pronunciation — and the cult-favorite green-and-purple sea-monster logo made the Lock Monsters one of the more memorable themed minor-pro hockey identities of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The franchise was rebranded as the Lowell Devils ahead of the 2006–07 season, ending one of the most distinctive short-run minor-pro identities of the era.
