The Lake Charles Ice Pirates brought professional hockey to southwestern Louisiana for three seasons in the late 1990s, joining the Western Professional Hockey League (WPHL) as an expansion franchise in 1997. The Ice Pirates played at the Lake Charles Civic Center and gave the Gulf Coast city its first taste of professional hockey — an ambitious experiment in a market without a hockey tradition.

The Ice Pirates lasted only three seasons in Lake Charles. Financial pressures and the difficulty of sustaining hockey in the bayou region forced the franchise to fold after the 1999–2000 season. The pirate-themed identity and Gulf Coast setting have made the Ice Pirates jersey one of the most distinctive obscure late-1990s Southern hockey identities.
