The Sugar Kings were originally a low level minor league team until purchased by Bobby Maduro, who had dreams of a major league team in Cuba. The team moved up to the triple A level and the slogan became "un paso mas y llegamos" (one more step and we arrive) in reference to being just one level away from the major leagues. During a game in 1959 shots were fired into the air outside the stadium to celebrate Castro's revolution and two players were hit by bullets. Teams no longer wanted to travel to Cuba and when relations became tense with the US, the team moved to New Jersey.
