The Memphis Southmen — later marketed as the Memphis Grizzlies — played both seasons of the WFL from 1974 to 1975 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, finishing 17–3 in the league's first year. The franchise was originally announced as the Toronto Northmen but was forced to relocate before the 1974 season when the Canadian government moved to block American pro football competition with the CFL.

Head coach John McVay led the Southmen, and the franchise was the WFL's best-positioned team to merge with the NFL when both leagues briefly explored consolidation. When the WFL folded in October 1975, the Southmen had a 7–4 record and were poised for another title run. Memphis would have to wait until the USFL Showboats and the AAF Express to host another major spring-football team.
