The Jacksonville Sharks played the 1974 season of the WFL at the Gator Bowl, becoming Jacksonville's first major pro football franchise. The Sharks struggled to 4–10 in the inaugural campaign and folded mid-season due to financial collapse — though the team eked out a full schedule before disbanding.

The franchise was replaced by the Jacksonville Express for 1975, a separate ownership group that continued WFL presence in northeast Florida. Jacksonville would later host the USFL Bulls (1984–85) and ultimately the NFL Jaguars (1995–present), but the Sharks were the city's pro football starting point.
