DFW Sports History

DFW pro sports identity is one of the deepest in the country across leagues. The original Dallas Texans of the NFL (1952) lasted one season before folding. The Dallas Texans of the AFL (1960–1963) won the 1962 AFL championship before relocating to Kansas City and becoming the Chiefs. The Dallas Chaparrals were a founding ABA franchise (1967–1973) that relocated to San Antonio and became the Spurs after the ABA-NBA merger. The Fort Worth Black Panthers (also Wonders) competed in the early Negro Leagues, with the Texas Black Spiders adding more depth to the region's Black baseball heritage. The Dallas Desperados of the AFL ran deep into the 2000s. The Arlington Renegades (formerly Dallas Renegades of the 2020 XFL) won the 2023 XFL championship and continue today in the merged UFL.
