The Detroit Cougars were one of pro soccer's earliest Motor City ventures, playing the 1968 season in the newly formed North American Soccer League (NASL) after a 1967 debut under an earlier circuit. The club staged home matches at Tiger Stadium, shifting to the University of Detroit Stadium when baseball scheduling forced a move. Backed by prominent local sports owners, the Cougars were an ambitious experiment in bringing the world's game to Detroit during soccer's first American wave. Mounting losses ended the run, and the franchise folded after the 1968 season.
