About the DC Defenders

The DC Defenders launched in the 2020 XFL relaunch as the league's flagship Mid-Atlantic franchise, immediately winning over Washington-area fans with bold red, white and gold uniforms, a shield-and-stars identity, and an electric home crowd at Audi Field. From the league's first weekend the Defenders captured national attention — quarterback Cardale Jones became an instant cult hero and the Audi Field "Defend the District" chants made the team one of the most exciting watches in spring football.

After the original 2020 season was cut short by COVID-19, the Defenders returned for the relaunched 2023 XFL season under new ownership and rebuilt their roster around a younger, more dynamic core. They went on to win the 2023 XFL Championship, defeating the Arlington Renegades to claim the league's revived title. When the XFL and USFL merged into the United Football League in 2024, the Defenders carried that championship momentum into the UFL and have remained one of the league's most popular and competitive franchises.
