Originally branded the Chicago Federals (Chi-Feds) in 1914, the team was renamed the Chicago Whales in 1915 — the same season they captured the Federal League pennant by half a game over the St. Louis Terriers. Owner Charlie Weeghman built a brand-new ballpark on the city's North Side that still stands today as Wrigley Field — the longtime home of the Cubs in major leagues.
When the Federal League folded after 1915, Weeghman bought the Cubs and moved them into his ballpark for the 1916 season — a quirk of history that gave Wrigley Field its enduring tenant. Notable Whales included player-manager Joe Tinker (of Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance fame) and Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown.
